5 Poetry Society: Your Parents Don't Like Me
Monique writes a poem using the prompt 'Your parents don't like me':
Your parents don’t like me
You didn’t have to tell me
It’s pretty obvious
In the way they quite literally look past me
I guess I’m not what they envisioned for you
My race, my gender, my religious beliefs
I’m a little quirky, maybe too real
And that’s just the blatant truth
Did you say I’m no longer welcome at your home?
It’s funny because I thought in you I had found a home
But they’re your parents
I’ve already lost this fight
I know I’ll be walking out alone
Excuse me Ma’am don’t talk to me in that tone
I’m just a person like you
Look me in my eye
When you belittle me
When you tell your child to choose
Blackmail them with
‘think about all that you’ll lose’
So let me be the one to walk away
It’s not for you
But for my own dignity
Ultimately I have too much to lose
The people pleaser in me is screaming
The lover in me is weeping
But somewhere a future love interest is gleaming
You’re parents don’t like me
And that’s fine
I’m leaving
